Genevieve E Yates Memorial Centre
Built in 1965, the Yates Memorial Theatre had aged beyond its original systems and finishes, with outdated acoustics and a lack of accessibility. This renovation sought to restore its original character while addressing key performance upgrades—most critically, the audience chamber’s sound quality.
Curved walnut ceiling reflectors and canted sidewall panels were introduced to evenly distribute sound and create a rich, immersive experience. These sculptural elements recall prairie winds and bring warmth and elegance to the space. The design draws from original 1960s motifs, reintroducing walnut throughout the lobby and stairwells, with diamond patterns and custom lighting enhancing the historical references.
Inspired by archival photos and original artwork, the refreshed palette and finishes blend mid-century authenticity with contemporary luxury. The result is a renewed landmark that honours its past while elevating the experience for today’s theatregoers.
Nika Yuko Bunka Centre
Established during Canada’s 1967 Centennial, the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden symbolizes international friendship and the contributions of Japanese Canadians to Lethbridge. In 2021, the City of Lethbridge opened the Nikka Yuko Bunka Centre—a new cultural hub designed to expand year-round programming and celebrate Japanese heritage.
The building's butterfly roof draws visitors in at its lowest point, where they enter into a bright, open Commons with framed views of the garden. Respecting Japanese design principles of simplicity, nature, and material honesty, the centre features exposed concrete floors, warm white oak millwork, and hardwood finishes.
Exterior details—such as Yellow Balau Batu wood cladding, tatami-inspired window proportions, and mica-infused stucco—balance tradition with contemporary form. Every element, from origami-inspired furniture to the folded café counter, is thoughtfully designed to connect the new building with the beloved garden it supports.
